What Is HFCS?
High fructose corn syrup (HFCS), also referred to as simply corn syrup, is almost made of the same ingredients as sugar and honey ("What is High Fructose Corn Syrup? | SweetSurprise.com",n.d., p. 1). It is a simple sugar that comes from corn. One of the main differences between HFCS and sugar is that it undergoes enzyme changing processes to turn some of its glucose into fructose ("High-fructose corn syrup", 2013, p. 1). This changing process helps to give the HFCS the sweetness that is needed to make it taste good in the products it's put in. The main difference between glucose and fructose is that glucose is more hunger-satisfying, so by changing some of the glucose into fructose, we are losing an important source of energy ("Fructose vs Glucose - Difference and Comparison | Diffen", n.d., p. 1).
HFCS is a cheaper alternative to real sugar (Hermes, 2011, p. 1). This allows companies to use much more of it to sweeten their products, regardless of the effects it may have on our bodies. More and more companies are starting to make the change to HFCS.
